Deep Sea Sports Fishing

When that sailfish takes the bait and your reel starts singing as the fish runs with the line, you’ll get the adrenaline rush that tells you the fight is on – who will tire out first, you or the sailfish? Some of the best ocean sports fishing in Costa Rica is found surrounding the Costa Ballena on the Osa Peninsula, the Furuno banks and Caño island. The Osa penisula is located just 30 miles north of the Panama border and 40 miles south of Marino Ballena National Park. Its position adjacent to the Gulfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf) creates the conditions for coastal waters rich in the small marine life that attract the most desirable fighting and sports fish. You will find blue and black marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, roosterfish, tarpon, snook, mahi mahi, runner, mackerel, yellow fin tuna, grouper, jack crevalle, barracuda, and snapper. Are you up to this challenge?

Sports fishing tours are available along the coast using agile boats in the 30-35 ft range. The tours provide all necessary fishing gear plus drinks and food. In route to the fishing grounds, you’ll have the chance to observe whales, dolphins, turtles, marine birds and the beautiful southern pacific coastline. Many fish types, such as the sailfish, are protected by Costa Rica’s catch-and-release policy; others can be taken for tonight’s dinner. Your captain will provide the advice, gear, and bait for whichever type of fish you want to catch.

In addition to deep sea fishing, inland river fishing is available for snook, red snapper, rainbow bass and grouper.
